“Arteriovenous malformation, also known as #AVM, is a vascular deficiency characterized by an abnormal connection between arteries and veins. Typically congenital, this condition rarely occurs before adolescence and is very difficult to treat,” explains Professor #GianniVercellio, Vascular Surgeon.
On Monday, May 18th, 2020, in collaboration with the Girandola non-profit organization for patients with Vascular Anomalies and Angiomas, an outstanding AVM surgery was performed at the Clinic in a 10-year-old girl suffering from congenital vascular malformation of the #rightfoot. Due to its location and nature, the condition would have caused unremitting pain if not treated surgically, therefore preventing mobility and forcing the girl to keep her leg raised for the rest of her life.
The surgery was a complete success, thanks to the cooperation of the surgical team – coordinated by Professor Gianni Vercellio – with the contribution of a prominent pediatric orthopedics expert, Professor #NicolaPortinaro, who corrected the severe foot deformity caused by the vascular malformation.
The surgery lasted about two hours, under general anesthesia. Our little patient was discharged yesterday.
